Run to Feed the Hungry
On an icy Thanksgiving morning, thousands of runners who were not me lined up on J Street for Sacramento’s annual Run to Feed the Hungry.
While there is no longer big prize money drawing runners from across the country and around the world (especially Africa), there were some impressive times and this race easily remains Sacramento’s premier 10 Km road race. (In 2008, there were four finishers under 30-minutes.)
Kevin Pool, of Folsom, took the overall win with a spectacular 31:15. Brad Poore of Auburn and Alan Jackson of Sacramento finished 2nd and 3rd in 31:22 and 31:26.
Mary Coordt was the top woman in 36:25. Katie Abbot and Liz Johnson followed in 38:06 and 38:09. All the top women were from Sacramento.
In the 5 Km, winner Austin Ramos, of Fair Oaks, flirted with sub-15, notching a 15:01 finish. Wyatt Landrum, of Oakley, and Matt Johnsrud, of Sacramento, were 2nd and 3rd with 15:19 and 15:56.
On the women’s side, San Francisco’s Hillary Kigar took the win in 17:09. A power trio of Sacramento’s Masters women followed: Midori Sperandeo in 17:24, Kirsten Schneider in 18:02, and Jenny Hitchings in 18:24.
With 41-year-old Mary Coordt’s win in the 10 Km, and Sperandeo (44), Schneider (42) and Hitchings (47) taking 2nd through 4th in the 5 Km, I have to once again note the dominance of local masters women in the road racing scene. Well done ladies!
Complete results are at Capitol Road Race.
The Sacramento Bee has a write-up and snapshots from the race.
Shameless plug: The Sac Bee will run a story this Thursday about Sacramento’s fast Masters women — Mary, Midori, Jaymee, Jenny, Kirsten and (almost) Masters Jen Pfeifer. It’s worth picking up a paper just to see the “glam” shot of the six of them together in our photo studio. Plus, if you buy the paper, I might get to keep my job!
