You Have Officially Run Out of Excuses
By now, I think we can all agree that exercise is key to good health and aging well. If you’re reading this website, I’ll assume that you’re a runner. As runners, we all face motivation that ebbs and flows. We have training days that are hard. Mornings that are cold and dark. Workouts where we’re the only one that shows up.
Some days our muscles are still sore from the prior day’s workout.
There are days we feel fat, hungry, cranky, lazy, and sleepy. Some days our shoes hurt our feet. Some days our feet just hurt. Some days everything hurts.
Some days are hard, but most of us do this sport because we love to run. We skip out on office parties and lazy weekend mornings at home because we are runners. Running defines us and gives shape to our days. It lets us eat a lot.
Today’s Sacramento Bee has a great story by Bill Paterson about Nebiyu Dingetu, a an El Camino High School runner who is blind in one eye and losing sight in the other one. Dingetu is not the fastest guy on the team, but he still loves to run.
Dingetu has had his share of guessing and mishaps on track and trail. “He took a wrong turn and could not find the finish line,” (coach) Laythe said, remembering a cross country race in 2009. “He was meandering through the crowd, and officials nearly panicked. They thought he was delirious from exhaustion. He laughed and just said, ‘I’m OK. I just can’t see.’ “
If you are having one of those days, you should probably read the article. It might help you not be such a whiner.
Interesting, the Bee’s Preps Plus blog has a story about yet another visually impaired runner. Kym Crosby, of River Valley in Yuba City, is legally blind and one of the school’s top runners. She’s the school’s record holder in the 100, 200, and 400 meters.
“She’s a blue-chip runner and represents us at all of our meets,” River Valley track coach Paul Odegard told Andy Arrenquin of the Appeal-Democrat. “If anyone knows about River Valley track, they know about Kym. She’s been the face of the program.”
I don’t want to hear your excuses anymore. Lace ’em up and get out the door!
