Amy Weissenbach Named Gatorade Athlete of the Year
Recently, I wrote about Harvard-Westlake School junior Amy Weissenbach’s phenomenal, nation-leading run in the 800 at this spring’s California Interscholastic Federation Track and Field State Championships.
This evening, Gatorade just named her the National Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Sweet!
And when you tell your children that they should be more like Amy, be sure to note that besides running like the wind, she “maintains a 4.23 weighted GPA in the classroom.”
Decathlete Gunnar Nixon, of Edmond, Oklahoma, was named the National Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
“Without question, Amy and Gunnar are deserving of recognition as the nation’s best high school track & field athletes based on their statistics on the track and the impact their accomplishments have had on their respective high schools’ success,” said Gatorade Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing Jennifer Storms. “But they are also a shining example to peers and aspiring young athletes of what a leader and a student-athlete should be.”
Harvard-Westlake High School juniors Cami Chapus and Amy Weissenbach will be among six high schoolers representing the United States at the IAAF World Youth Championships of Track and Field in Lille, France.
