Will the New Flood Safety Center Wreck the Parkway?
If you ever run, walk or ride through the American River Parkway near Hazel Avenue, you should be paying attention.
The US Bureau of Reclamation, National Weather Service and California Department of Water Resources are considering siting a new, 200,000 square foot, Joint Operations Center on property along the American River Parkway near Nimbus Dam and Hazel Avenue.
The construction and siting of this facility, along with 800 parking spaces and 600 workers, would negatively impact our use of the parkway for recreation and bicycle commuting. The proposed site would be squeezed between Gold Point Lane and the bike trail adjacent to the Fish Hatchery. (Google Map)
There will be public meeting to take comments on this proposal, this Thursday at the Aquatic Center:
SEPTEMBER 22, 2011
2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
SACRAMENTO STATE AQUATICS CENTER
1901 HAZEL AVE., GOLD RIVER, CALIFORNIA
(Helpful hint: If you go, and you should if you are able, be prepared, be polite, and be concise in your comments. Focus on the facts.)
There is more information on the project at the Save the American River Association’s website.
I’ll try to share more information about the project as it becomes available.
Aside from attending the meeting, is there anyone that it would be appropriate to send letters to?
Thanks,
Mark
1Good question Mark! I’ll update the article, but in the meantime…

If this “center” needs to be sited somewhere in this area of Sac County – it needs to be sited on the South side of 50 somewhere in the light industrial area near other office buildings. Not sited smack-dab in the middle of the parkway.
Stupid.
3Yeah, with commercial property vacancies being sooooo low right now, it must be hard for them to find an adequate building.
