New Race Director for Western States 100
The Western States Endurance Run Board just announced their selection of a new race director to replace the departing Greg Soderlund.
As of today, all the details I have are:
The WS Board is pleased to announce the selection of Craig Thornley of Eugene, OR, for the RD position.
Craig will serve as Assistant RD until Greg Soderlund’s retirement in December, 2013. Full details to follow.
Prior to this, Thornley has been the race director of the (Where’s) Waldo 100K.
I’ll be sure to post follow-up information as it is available. In the meanwhile, you can get to know Craig better by listening to this interview at Ultrarunner Podcast.
Good luck to Craig, and farewell to Greg!
In my opinion Craig was a good choice to be the new director and help guide Western States in the coming years. There are many pressures coming at the race to respect the tradition, while many want to see this be a championship race for 100miles. It takes someone with passion for the race, good management skills, a thick skin and a little savvy to communicate with all those that will press him for his time. I understand there are others that have excellent skills and race direction in the local area. I just felt Craig was a bit different in his skill sets and I welcome him as the new RD for Western States…
