Fab 40s 5K
As I sat through the long awards ceremony after the Fab 40s 5K, the question that kept running through my mind was “Where are all these fast people coming from?”
For a 5K in flat-as-a-pancake Sacramento, it’s a somewhat challenging course–not just because it starts and finishes on the highest hill in Sacramento.
There are deceptive, rolling hills on that East Sac course, and yet, Saturday’s times were still quite fast.
Steven Grolle, 17, of Sonora, took first overall with a quite brisk 15:46 and yet only bested Camron Shahmirzadi, 23, of Folsom, by a couple tenths of a second. Finishing third, and a little further back, was Osamu Tada, 32, of Sacramento, with a time of 16:09.
In the women’s race, Emi Prim, 17, of Elk Grove, bested all comers with a 19:10 finish. Coming in second, in 19:22 was Suzi Harvey, 50, of Sparks. Rounding out the top-three women was Wheatland’s Karen Jeffers, 50, with a 19:46 finish.
The top masters women were the previously mentioned Suzi Harvey and Karen Jeffers in first and second, followed by Cherie Smith, 42, in 20:38.
The top masters men were Mike Livingston, 48, of Eldorado Hills, with a 16:37, Steve Hussey, 47, of Rancho Cordova, 17:45, and Elk Grove’s Kurt Mellick, 46, in 17:47.
This race has grown over the years and it was great to see so many competitive youth there, too.
Stand-outs, besides winners Grolle and Prim, obviously, included Mikey Sparks, 15, of Sacramento, with a 17:53, Ryan Dunlap, 12, of Sonora, with a 18:22 finish, Noah Seto, 12 of Wilton, a bit back in 18:55, and Kaili Seto (Noah’s sister?), 8, also of Wilton, with a 26:38 finishing time. We hope to see them all again next year!
