If you had been at the first Run to Feed the Hungry, you’d hardly recognize the massive event it’s grown into during the last two decades.

Ballooning from several hundred to 27,000, it’s become one of the largest races in the country and probably the largest Thanksgiving race period.

It’s also a tremendous fund raiser for the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services–this year bringing in around $900,000.

If you can push your way to the front of the crowds, it’s also a pretty fast race.

Jane Kibii, 29, of Auburn, took advantage of the fast course and won the 10 Km in a smoking fast 33:29, and then lined up for the 5 Km and won that in a new course record 16:03.

Olivia Mickle,  23, of Sacramento, was second woman in the 10 Km in 34:10, and Allison Maxon, 28, of Folsom, finished third with a 35:24.

For the men, Malcom Richards, 32, of San Francisco, ran away with the win in the 10 Km with a 30:36 finish time (That’s 4:56 per mile, in case you’re curious.)

Masters phenom Chris Knorzer, 45, of Rocklin, was second in 32:54, and Gurjeet Barayah, 29, of Elk Grove, was third with a 32:59 finish.

In the 5 Km, if you wanted to place, you’d better have brought your A-game. Kevin Pool, 31, of Folsom, was the overall winner with a time of 14:41 (4:44 per mile!).

Garrett Seawell, 23, of Roseville, was second in 14:51, and Tim Tollefson, 29, of Mammoth Lakes, rounded out the top three with a 14:54 finish.

As noted previously, Jane Kibii was the overall women’s 5 Km winner.

Rounding out the top-three women was Alex Kosinski, 25, of El Dorado Hills, in second with 16:51, and Lindsay Tollefson, 29, of Mammoth Lakes, finishing third in 17:04.

Complete results can be found here.

The Sacramento Bee has an excellent write up on the event.
