Ultrarunners Dominate at the San Francisco Marathon
Strictly speaking, the San Francisco Marathon isn’t a local race–but a lot of locals run it. For that reason, I’ll usually poke through the results to see if I recognize any local runners.
While I didn’t spot any familiar locals among the top finishers, I did notice something peculiar. There were a lot of ultrarunners in the top men and women.
The overall winner was Michael Wardian, who was only a few weeks off his 3rd place finish at Badwater.
Chris Knorzer, in 5th place, has also dabbled in ultrarunning and had run the Tahoe Rim Trail 50K on July 16th. (Actually, Knorzer can’t be a real ultrarunner because he doesn’t have a blog.)
On the women’s side, there were ultrarunning superstars (and bloggers) Devon Crosby Helms (3rd) and Meghan Arbogast (6th).
When I looked at the 2010 results, there were even more ultrarunners I recognized in the top ten: Wardian again, plus Ian Sharman and Chad Ricklefs.
What’s up with that? I think it means that running those long miles might not hurt you train for the marathon. Of course, this is just a theory.
Complete results are here.
Update:
Alert reader “Mandie” noticed that in the 2nd Half Marathon (They have a first half and a second half.), Folsom’s Kevin Pool was 4th in what I believe is a PR 1:06:21, and Auburn’s Brad Poore was 5th in 1:07:10.
On the women’s side, the winner was Caroline Kirui, a Kenyan runner who is living and training in Auburn.
Local runner Kevin Pool took 4th place in the second half running a new pr of 1:06:21. Not a full marathon but still impressive.
1Good catch on Kevin! I didn’t look through the half marathon results.
