Runners Fly at Run on the Sly–Updated!
Sunday’s Run on the Sly trail races continue a long tradition of August trail racing along Jenkinson Lake in El Dorado County. This year, more than 600 runners completed the various races.
In the 50K, Palo Alto’s Cameron Berg ran away with the overall win in a smoking 3:57 on that hilly course.
The next three in were locals. These were Lincoln’s Michael Fink, finishing in 4:17 (only a couple minutes off his age group course record), Folsom’s Jesse Barragan, with 4:30, and the women’s winner Jen Pfeifer, of El Dorado, in 4:33.
Pfeifer’s winning time of 4:33:21 improves on the women’s course record of 4:34:21 set by Kate Evans in 2010.
The 2nd and 3rd place women in the 50K were Roxana Pana, of Davis, in 5:06, and Amy Phillips, of El Dorado Hills, in 5:08.
Pfeifer is on an ultrarunning tear this year, notching several wins and top finishes. Don’t be surprised to see her on a USA 100K team in the near future.
In the 20K, the top-three were Nat Blaesser of Folsom in 2:45, Marc Flores of Elk Grove in 3:07, and Casey Newton of Fair Oaks in 3:13.
If I were going to mention the top masters in the 20-mile race, I’d have to mention Sacramento’s Pete Montgomery, who finished 4th overall in 3:18. If he can start making more of our Thursday tempo runs, I’ll bet he can find the five minutes he needed to make the top-three. (I’m just sayin’.)
The top women were Susan G. Miller of Pollock Pines, who finished in 3:27; Danielle Herrick of Shingle Springs, with 3:32; and April Barnes of Pollock Pines just seconds behind, also finishing in 3:32.
In the half-marathon (reported variously as 13.9 to 18.5 miles–depending on whether you got lost or not), Sacramento’s speedy Chris Vargo took top honors with a 1:28 finish. Lincoln’s Brian Benestad was second in 1:38, and Agustin Rodriguez of Chico was third in 1:40.
The top woman in the half marathon was Erin Wachter, of Sacramento, who turned in a brisk 1:45. Filling out the top three were Tara Navarro of San Francisco, who finished in 1:53, and Sacramento’s Michelle LaSala, who brought it home in 1:55.
In the 12K race, the top-woman was Roseville High School track athlete Shayna Powless, who finished in 56:19. The top man, and overall winner was Folsom’s Camron Shahmirzadi, who wrapped it up in 46:12.
This race is run in support of El Dorado County Search and Rescue. It disappeared for a few years before being resurrected by Fleet Feet Sports of Sacramento’s race management team. This is a great event in a beautiful setting and I highly recommend it.

1Good catch, Jen! I updated the story to include Pfeifer’s new course record.
2was it a 20k or 20 miler?
320 miler. There was a 5k, 1/2 mar, 20 mile, and 50k.
4Good story John. Thanks to everyone that came out. Sounds like most had a great day.
