2011 Road Race Wrap-Up: Grand Prix Edition
The end of 2011 is upon us so it’s time to check out the results of the major road race series/grand prix that local runners compete in.
Local
We’ll start with Sacramento’s own Buzz Oates RunSac Race Series. This year-long series of local races is a points competition with over $7,000 in prize money and bonuses. Points are earned based on age-graded performances in more than a dozen top Sacramento-area road races. There are awards for team and individual competition, and in 2011, there were several hundred individuals and eight local teams vying for the prize money.
The top placing individuals for 2011 were Janice Kesterson, 57, running for the Buffalo Chips, and Terry Baucom, 54, running for Fleet Feet Racing.
Second and third individual women were Karen Jeffers, 48, with the River City Rebels, and Stacey Worthen, 38, running for Fleet Feet Racing.
The second and third individual men were Mason Myers, 42, running for the River City Rebels, and Mike Ammon, 66, running unattached. Complete individual results are here.
In the team competition, Fleet Feet Racing took first in both the men and women divisions, with the River City Rebels and the Running Zone teams finishing 2nd and 3rd amongst the men and the Buffalo Chips and River City Rebels finishing 2nd and 3rd amongst the women.
For top individual performances, the top woman was Barbara Miller, 72, running for the Buffalo Chips, and Rich Hanna, 46, running for the River City Rebels.
The 2nd and 3rd best individual performances for women were turned in by Janice Kesterson, 57, with the Buffalo Chips, and Midori Sperandeo, 45, running unattached (although now with the Impalas).
The 2nd and 3rd best individual performances by men were earned by River City Rebels teammates Iain Mickle, 50, and John Mansoor, 55.
Well done all!
The 2012 schedule for Buzz Oates RunSac Race Series can be found here.
Regional
The more regional and more competitive Pacific Association USA Track and Field Road Grand Prix has a multitude of divisions that you are welcome to investigate for yourself here.
Standout locals running in the “open” division include the Rebels’ Gus Gibbs, who finished 2nd in the open men’s short series and 7th in the open men’s long series. Auburn’s Brad Poore, running for the West Valley Track Club, finished 3rd in the open men’s long division, and Roseville’s Tim Tollefson, running for Chico Track Club, finished 10th in the same division.
In the open women’s short division, the top local was Roseville’s Lindsay Nelson, running for the Aggies, who finished 2nd. In the open women’s long division, the top local was Sacramento’s Megan Daly, running for the Impalas, who finished 8th.
For the masters women, the top local in the short and long division (6th and 7th, respectively), was Karen Jeffers, with the River City Rebels.
For the masters men, the standout local is the River City Rebel’s Iain Mickle. Mickle, was 1st in the masters AND senior men short distance division, and 8th in the masters AND senior men’s long distance division! Other stand-our results for local masters men include Michael Fadling (Fleet Feet Racing), who was 2nd in the masters men long division, Chris Knorzer (River City Rebels) who was 4th in the masters men long division, and Edward Randolph (Buffalo Chips Running Club) who was 10th in the masters men long division.
Way to represent!
(Note: I am sure I’ve missed a few folks deserving of mention. Feel free to call them out in the comments.)
Another thing we Rebels are quite proud of is our Men’s Master Team winning outright the PAUSATF XC Championship Race held in Golden Gate Park, and the same team finishing second overall (barely nipped for 1st) in the PA XC Series. Additionally, the Rebels sent a team to the 2011 USATF National Club XC Championships that was held in Seattle. This Rebel team finished 7th overall nationally, first NorCal team (second CA team).
Please excuse the club-promotion on my part (this comment was not officially cleared through, nor endorsed by the Rebels :-). But, I believe the Rebels represent(ed) Sacramento/NorCal well, and a lot of deserving people that run/race as Rebels were instrumental and deserve credit for the Rebel accomplishments.
A clink of the glasses for the New Year and to running/racing with and against all our buddies and budettes on the other teams.
1You are correct, Kevin! A post on XC will be up later today.
