What’s Your Excuse?
On an uncharacteristically cool Memorial Day morning, several hundred runners and walkers lined up in Land Park for another running of the No Excuses 5K.
No Excuses is Sacramento’s original opportunity for fast young men to get their clocks cleaned by older, fast women and pre-teens in the age-graded results–a race within a race, so to speak.
In the age-graded results, winner Barbara Miller, 73, of Modesto continues to dominate by continuing to run pretty darn fast–age graded or not.
Miller’s actual time of 24:32 (7:55/mile pace), age grades to a 13:20!
Nipping at Miller’s heels was Oakdale’s Janice Kesterson, 59, who ran a 20:26, which age-grades to a 13:50.
Third in the age-graded rankings was Karen Kunz, 57, of Rancho Cordova, who ran a 19:57 that age-grades to a 13:53.
By the halfway point of the “regular race” Charlie Brenneman, of Rocklin, and Jeffrey Moreland, of Reno, were running together with a 50 meter lead on the chase pack.
By the end of the race, Brenneman had pulled away to win with a 15:33 to Moreland’s 15:41.
Gurjeet Barayah, of Elk Grove, finished third in 16:10.
For the women, 14-year-old Sofia Castiglioni, of Davis, had the fastest finish in 18:20. Kristen Soloway, also of Davis, was second in 18:26, and Stacey Worthen, of Sacramento, was third in 19:05.
Top masters’ male honors go to Alberto Gomez, 44, of Chico, for his 16:55 finish. Second masters male was Anthony Dacquisto, 49, also of Chico, who finished in 17:26. Third masters male was Jacob Nur, 55, of Elk Grove, with a 17:35.
The top female masters’ crown goes to the third woman overall, Stacey Worthen, 40, for her 19:05 finish. Janine Marello, 40, also of Sacramento, was the next masters woman in at 19:26.
Christine Mellick, 45, of Elk Grove, rounded out the top three masters women with a 19:46 finishing time.
