I can only vaguely remember my first 10K, but I am pretty certain I didn’t run it in 32 minutes. Nice!

Former UC Davis standout Kim Conley, who now runs for the Sacramento Running Association’s Elite Team, ran a personal best Tuesday in the first round of the women’s 5,000 meters at this year’s Olympic Games, but failed to advance to the final.

Conley finished 12th in the second heat with a time of 15: 14.48–well ahead of her 15:19.79 previous best set six weeks ago at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene.

Conley’s teammates Julie Culley and Molly Huddle both advanced to the final, which will be run on Friday and shown at some completely random time on NBC.

Weekend at the Races: Kaleo 5K

August 06, 2012 By: John Blue Category: Collegiate, General Running News, Road Races

I know we were all focused on the women’s Olympic Marathon and Saturday’s phenomenal 10,000 meters (Rupp!!), but there were some local people actually out there running their own races this weekend.

If you wanted to run with (or without) your dog, the Kaleo 5K looks like the place to have been. Michael Carlone took the overall win in 18:36. Jamie Styles and Justin Flowers rounded out the top three men in 19:01 and 20:07, respectively.

The top woman was Kristi Capello, in 20:29. Following her in for second and third were Katie Madaus and Christina Applegate in 21:46 and 21:50.

There is no word in how the dogs finished. Complete results are here.

It turns out there was a lot going on in Wallace’s life in the time leading up to the finals.

AR Sprinter is Olympic Trials Bound

May 07, 2012 By: John Blue Category: Collegiate, General Running News, Track, Videos

One advantage of the apparent death of the “arena deal” is that the Bee has some extra ink lying around that they can use to write about some other, better sports.

For example, this morning’s sports page has an excellent story on American River College sprinter Diondre Batson.

Batson, 19, has already earned himself an Olympic “A” standard time in the 200 with his 20.53 at the Mt. SAC Relays. (Video below.)

Batson is still about .05 seconds shy of the “A” standard in the 100, but seems to have room for improvement. Does he have enough time before the trials to get there? We can only hope.

Hornets’ Wallace: All American in 800

June 11, 2011 By: John Blue Category: Collegiate, Track

Lea Wallace earned All American in the 800

Hornets senior Lea Wallace wrapped up her collegiate running career this weekend with a 9th place finish in the 1500, and placing 6th and earning All American in the NCAA Div I Outdoor Championships 800.

In Friday evening’s 800, Wallace finished in 2:04.56 and, according to Sac State, she recorded the highest finish by a Hornet woman since Marisa Avendano placed second in the 10,000 in 1997.

Multiple, lengthy weather delays frustrated the athletes and event organizers this weekend. According to CSUS: (more…)
