The Army Corps of Engineers is working on a levee improvement project between the Campus Commons Golf course and the Northrop Avenue access (approximately between miles 6 and 7).
Because of this work, starting this week, the main trail will be closed and trail users will be detoured along the old Lower Loop trail.
Additionally, access to the Parkway via Northrop Avenue will be closed. (This is where we get to the trail from the Howe Avenue Panera Restaurant.)

Ranger Ollie sez: “Be careful!”
If you are planning to run on the American River Parkway this weekend, don’t forget that Saturday (July 21st) is Eppies Great Race.
This means the trail will be closed from the Guy West Bridge to Sunrise (figure miles 7.5 to 20) from 6:00 AM until noon.
One option is to run somewhere else and then head over to River Bend Park and watch the finish. Count how many athletes get out of their kayaks and fall down to the ground because their legs cramp 50 feet from the finish line.
Plan accordingly!

Last week, I wrote about some repairs of the parkway around the 3 mile mark. The work was supposed to have finished by now, but there have been delays.
The notice from the Sacramento County Regional Parks said:
Beginning Thursday, March 1, the American River Parkway Bike Tail will have a short detour near Mile 3 while work is being performed to repair damage (undermining) to the trail by beavers. The detour will take trail users off the paved tail for less than 100 feet and onto the adjacent unpaved maintenance road. The detour will be in effect until the repairs are completed.

Expect some construction related detours on the Parkway this weekend.
From the Sacramento County Regional Parks web page:
Beginning Thursday February 23, there will be a detour on the ARP Bike Trail between mile 2.5 and 3.5 for trail construction. A detour will take trail users up on the levee. Construction is expected to be completed by the following Monday.
On Saturday, February 25, the Guy West Bridge (near mile 8.0) will be closed to all traffic for bridge inspection and repair. Additionally, the bike trail will be detoured a short distance onto the levee to prevent park users having to pass under the bridge.
Plan accordingly!

Copper thieves hit the American River Parkway Foundation’s Volunteer Center last night.
The theft knocked out the power and left significant damage at the building near the entrance to William Pond Park. No word yet as to the price tag for repairs.

A bit of the Parkway Trail
It looks like there is some levee repair work going on along the South Side of the American River between Watt Ave and Larchmont Park.
The Army Corps of Engineers says the trail along the top of the levee will be closed until approximately November 30th.
This probably won’t affect traffic much along the Parkway, since the trail ends at Larchmont and there is very little through traffic anyway. (Most Parkway users will be on the North side of the river.)
Be sure to plan accordingly!

Does a 200,000 square foot office building belong here?
Regular readers will remember that we’ve already written about the gigantic, flood control facility proposed for construction along the American River Parkway, at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery.
The proposal is still alive and kicking, and today’s Bee includes an article with some important information about the project.
Most of us who use the Parkway are concerned about adding significant traffic to an area already congested with vehicle traffic (Hazel Avenue and US 50), as well as impinging on a major recreation and bicycle commuting route.

Does a 200,000 square foot office building belong here?
The Bee weighed in today on the proposal to build a gigantic office building adjacent to the Nimbus Fish Hatchery.
They point out that the other sites being considered are superior in every way (cheaper, safer, consistent with existing land use, etc.).
These sites include an existing building at Mather Field (the building would need to be expanded and improved), as well as a property at Kilgore Road and Sunrise Boulevard.

If you ever run, walk or ride through the American River Parkway near Hazel Avenue, you should be paying attention.
The US Bureau of Reclamation, National Weather Service and California Department of Water Resources are considering siting a new, 200,000 square foot, Joint Operations Center on property along the American River Parkway near Nimbus Dam and Hazel Avenue.
The construction and siting of this facility, along with 800 parking spaces and 600 workers, would negatively impact our use of the parkway for recreation and bicycle commuting. The proposed site would be squeezed between Gold Point Lane and the bike trail adjacent to the Fish Hatchery. (Google Map)

At the beginning of this past Saturday morning’s long run along the Parkway, I was greeted by a low smoke sitting along the river and a couple of trucks worth of fire fighters cleaning up a small grass fire just upstream from River Bend Park.
I didn’t realize that it was only one fire of many (nine reportedly) being set along the river that day.
According to the Bee, authorities are looking for an adult, white male with short hair, wearing gray pants and shirt, “riding a 10-speed-type bicycle.”
Looks like the firebug was out there again yesterday. Read about it in today’s Bee.
Keep your eyes open!
