Running related news in small, bite size pieces.

First off, to follow up his 5th place finish in the final of the Olympic 800 meters, Nick Symmonds ran a 5:19 beer-mile this week. This is apparently a new American Record.

If you are not sure what a beer mile is, you can watch the video. It makes my stomach lurch just to watch.

Vegan Athletes

Can a vegan diet help you run faster?

Gretchen Reynolds, writing at the New York Times Well blog, explores the issue of whether athletes can perform well on a vegan diet.

Her piece was sparked by the release of Scott Jurek’s new book Eat & Run, which we all are no doubt going to run off and purchase.

I enjoy Reynold’s writing on running and health, but was a little frustrated by the lack of distinction here between vegetarian (no meat) and vegan (no animal products).

Who is Lance Armstrong’s New Coach?

It looks like Lance Armstrong has finally decided to take this running thing seriously and hire a coach.

And, I guess if you are Lance Armstrong and you want a running coach, you can get trained by Alberto Salazar.

Lance’s goal for the marathon? He wants to run 2:50 to 2:55–in an Ironman Triathlon.
